EMV Chip Credit and Debit Cards

Chips and Dip

EMV (or, as they are more commonly known, "chip") cards are here.

The future of security is here! New chip cards, which are "dipped" into a terminal rather than swiped, providing an added level of safety for you. Check out the info and video below for a few more details and a demo of how your new card works.

EMV questions? We've got answers.

What should I do with my old Royal Credit Union Visa card after I activate the EMV card? Once you activate your new chip-enabled card, please destroy your existing card.

How secure are chip-enabled cards? The chip card technology that we chose is extremely secure, and the changing data transmitted via the chip makes it even more so! (The magnetic strips on traditional credit and debit cards store contain unchanging data.)

Can my card information be stolen off the chip by a fraudster bumping into me? No. There are two types of EMV chips: contact and contactless. Royal has chosen to use chips that require contact (e.g., you must insert your card into a terminal in order for data to be read). This eliminates the ability for a hacker to access card data via the contactless chip’s radio frequency.

Does my chip-enabled debit card work at the ATM? Yes.  You can still use your card to get cash, check your balance, and more. Be sure to insert the chip end of your card into the ATM with the chip facing up and follow the on-screen prompt at the ATM.

Can I still purchase online?  Yes. Simply enter your chip card number for online purchases by following the same process you do today.

How do I know if a terminal accepts chip cards?  If a terminal is chip-enabled, it will prompt you to insert it instead of swiping it. If you already know your chip card works there, start by inserting your card.

Do I still have to sign or enter a PIN for my card transaction? Yes. It will depend on if you choose debit or credit.

Can I use my EMV card outside of the country? Yes. Your chip card should be accepted anywhere Visa is accepted. However, it may not work at an unattended terminal overseas (Example: self-service environments, from parking and ticketing machines, to vending and multi-media kiosks).
