Chips and Dip

EMV (or, as they are more commonly known, "chip") cards are here.

The future of security is here! New chip cards, which are "dipped" into a terminal rather than swiped, providing an added level of safety for you. Check out the info and video below for a few more details and a demo of how your new card works.

EMV questions? We've got answers.

When will I receive my new chip-enabled cards? The rollout of our new EMV chip-enabled cards has already begun! We are following a schedule that will allow for everyone to get their new chip-enabled card by the end of July. In order to keep the process as streamlined and efficient as possible, we unfortunately cannot issue new chip-enabled cards upon request.

Will my card info change? For your convenience, your card number will not change.  However, your card may have a new expiration date and a new three digit security code on the back of the card, so be sure to update your info with billers that charge your card regularly. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Will my PIN change? Yes and no. Your debit card PIN will not change. Your credit card PIN will change if you have one already.

Will the new cards need to be activated?  Yes. The old credit card will shut off after the new card is activated. The old debit card will continue to work until expiration.  Members are instructed to destroy their previous cards.

What should I do with my old Royal Credit Union Visa card when I receive my new card? Once you activate your new chip-enabled card, please destroy your existing card.

Will my new chip card be less secure than my current magnetic stripe card? The chip card technology that we chose is extremely secure, and the changing data transmitted via the chip makes it even more so! (The magnetic strips on traditional credit and debit cards store contain unchanging data.)

Can my card information be stolen off the chip by a fraudster bumping into me? No. There are two types of EMV chips: contact and contactless. Royal has chosen to use chips that require contact (e.g., you must insert your card into a terminal in order for data to be read). This eliminates the ability for a hacker to access card data via the contactless chip’s radio frequency.

Does my chip-enabled debit card work at the ATM? Yes.  You can still use your card to get cash, check your balance, and more. Be sure to insert the chip end of your card into the ATM with the chip facing up and follow the on-screen prompt at the ATM.

Will anything change during my online purchases?  No. You will use your chip card for online purchases by following the same process you do today.

How do I know if a terminal accepts chip cards? During the transition to chip, you can swipe your card as you normally would and follow the prompts. If the terminal is chip-enabled, it will prompt you to insert it instead. If you already know your chip card works there, start by inserting your card.

Will I still have to sign or enter a PIN for my card transaction? Yes. You will have to do one of those verification methods as you do today. It will depend on if you choose debit or credit.

Will I be able to use my EMV card outside of the country? Yes. Your chip card should be accepted anywhere Visa is accepted. However, it may not work at an unattended terminal overseas (Example: self-service environments, from parking and ticketing machines, to vending and multi-media kiosks).
