At Southview Middle School in Edina, science isn’t just a subject; it’s an adventure, thanks to the creativity and passion of teacher Dan Geere. His unique ability to weave storytelling into his lessons keeps students engaged and eager to learn. One of his most cherished tales is the “Starfish Story,” where a boy, seeing thousands of stranded starfish, begins throwing them back into the ocean. When told his efforts wouldn’t make a difference, he responds, “I know, but it makes a difference to the ones that make it back.” This lesson, reinforcing the power of small actions, has resonated deeply with his students. Mr. Geere’s science lessons are anything but ordinary. From dramatic fire demonstrations to hands-on experiments like burying food and toys to study decomposition, he turns learning into an adventure. He even challenges students to test their speed against beavers in his FLEX session, “Are You Faster Than a Beaver?”—an experience packed with curiosity and excitement. His ability to captivate students was on full display during his FLEX day on “The Mystery of Magic,” where he transported students into a world of wonder.
