On Sept. 1, Royal partnered with the Minnesota Credit Union Network and 16 other credit unions from across Minnesota to play Go Big or Go Broke® with attendees at the 2022 Minnesota State Fair. Over 120 fairgoers participated in the game, and hundreds more stopped by to watch. Everyone was a winner, as players redeemed the “money” they earned during the game for gift cards and credit union swag, and onlookers also won swag by answering one-off trivia questions.
Developed by Royal’s financial education team, Go Big or Go Broke® is a life-sized financial literacy board game. Players navigate the 20x20 foot board by answering trivia, decision, and chance questions centered around financial well-being. Along the way, they can encounter trips to the Money Pit (a giant ball pit where they can earn money) or get stuck paying for a costly mistake at Credit Chaos. The game is designed to be fun, upbeat and engaging while also providing practical financial education.
Initially created as an interactive tool to connect with college-aged audiences, the game features questions about real-world financial situations and includes topics such as budgeting, credit, debt, and financial aid. For the game’s appearance at the MN State Fair, the questions were exchanged for ones that targeted a wider range of adult participants. The game was created with the flexibility to be tailored to many different audiences.
